Quite different from the conventional wax candles, a Hopi ear candle is actually a cotton tube impregnated with beeswax, honey and therapeutic oils, that is painlessly inserted into the ear and lit at one end, helping to gently draw out impurities and tenderly relieving pressure in the head and sinuses. It is an ancient therapy stretching back to the Chinese, Egyptians, Tibetans, Maya, Aztec and American Indian cultures.
The treatment can be very relaxing and soothing. A light suction action (chimney effect) and the movement of the flame create a vibration of air in the ear candle, generating a massage-like effect. This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It is soothing and said to be helpful for earache and headache, noise, stress and nervousness.
