Chemical peels use different acids to improve and renew the skin. Examples include mandelic, salicylic, azelaic, glycolic and many others. Some acids come from natural sources, such as almonds, sugar cane or willow bark, while others are synthetically produced.

Importantly, not all acids exfoliate — some mainly work by calming inflammation, regulating oil production or improving pigmentation. Their main purpose is to target concerns such as congestion, acne, pigmentation, uneven texture and signs of ageing.

Chemical peels can be performed as a single treatment or as a course, depending on the skin concern and the type of acid used. For best results, a course of 3–6 treatments every 2–4 weeks is often recommended, followed by maintenance treatments every 6–8 weeks as needed.
