A city of Sieges

In the 17th century, Limerick Island was besieged by different armies three times, which resulted in the celebrated Treaty of Limerick. The first siege was in 1642 after the Confederates overtook the King John’s castle. In 1651, Limerick was besieged a second time by Oliver Cromwell’s army which was under Henry Ireton. The third time was 1690-1691 immediately after the Battle of the Boyne. During this time, more than 14,000 Irish and French forces regrouped behind Limerick’s wall. This was the last redoubt of the Jacobite army. It was a bloody and protracted affair.

A year into the siege, the English managed to break in and force their surrender.
